Multiple Sclerosis and TCM

In TCM, MS typically involves disruptions in the flow of Qi (vital energy) and Blood, along with imbalances between Yin and Yang.

Disruptions can manifest as what we call "Wind" invading the channels, "Dampness" obstructing proper energy circulation, or "Heat" consuming vital fluids. The liver, kidney, and spleen organ systems play particularly important roles in MS patterns.

How TCM Views MS Symptoms

The varying symptoms of MS make perfect sense when viewed through TCM principles:

Fatigue and weakness represent a deficiency of Qi, particularly in the Spleen and Kidney systems. Think of these organ systems not as anatomical structures but as functional networks that generate and distribute energy throughout your body.

Numbness and tingling indicate blockages in the meridian pathways—like rivers of energy becoming partially dammed, causing unusual sensations downstream.

Balance and coordination issues suggest Wind disruptions in the liver system which, in TCM, governs smooth movement and coordination.

Vision problems relate to liver energy not properly nourishing the eyes, as the liver system has a special relationship with vision in TCM theory.

Our Integrative TCM Approach to MS

At our practice, we develop personalised treatment plans for MS that help address your unique pattern of imbalance. Our comprehensive approach includes:

  • Acupuncture - We stimulate specific points to help restore proper Qi flow, reduce inflammation (Heat), clear obstructions (Dampness), and calm disruptive patterns (Wind) to improve energy, reduce numbness, and enhance function. Acupuncture is can be particularly beneficial in cases of peripheral neuropathy.

  • Cupping and Moxibustion: These therapies help to improve circulation, reduce stagnation, and alleviate pain. Cupping can be especially helpful for muscle tension and stiffness, while moxibustion can warm the meridians and alleviate cold-related pain.

  • QR®Now: Fast-acting pain relief treatment unique to our practice. Using semi-permanent auricular (ear) acupuncture needles, we aim to reduce pain rapidly.

  • Nutritional Coaching - We provide TCM-based dietary guidance, recommending foods that strengthen deficient systems while avoiding those that aggravate your condition (like warming foods for Dampness patterns)

  • Qigong - This gentle practice helps strengthen Qi, and harmonise body and mind. Depending on your abilities, we can either recommend movement-based or seated practices.

What Makes Our Approach Different

Unlike conventional treatments that focus solely on suppressing immune response or managing symptoms, our TCM approach addresses the root imbalances that contribute to MS progression. We don't simply treat symptoms—we work to restore harmony to your entire system.

Many people continue with their conventional medical treatments whilst pursuing TCM. This integrated approach may result in:

  • Reduced frequency and severity of flare-ups

  • Improved energy and reduced fatigue

  • Better mood and cognitive function

  • Enhanced overall quality of life

  • Potential reduction in medication side effects
